Our Reef? trainsforming passive citizens into engaged stakeholders through collaboration design. 2014 collaboration and design activism proposal by Emily Timms, Anna O'Reily and Genevieve Kruyessen.

Design Problem: A recent CSIRO study of the Mackay region outlined strategies for improving the management of local
coastal ecosystems. As a result of this collaborative process, local community educational campaigns have been one of the key areas flagged by the community as a key focus for action. Current environmental education campaigns in the region have been exhausted and have become ineffective. We believe the community has become immune to traditional education campaigns and have lost the desire to change their behaviours that impact the environment.

The purpose of the educational campaign is to facilitate community agency for the improved management of local coastal ecosystems in Mackay. We believe that while the majority of stakeholders are aware of their impact on the environment, an
eroded sense of ownership and responsibility for the environment prevents proactive agency. To overcome this issue we suggest a collaborative approach that engages co-facilitated learning and collective action to create a counter-narrative. Our campaign encourages individuals and corporations to take ownership of the exquisite natural environments that they are
so fortunate to live amongst. This transaction of ownership, transforming ‘The Reef ’ to ‘Our Reef ’, will facilitate responsibility among the community. It is a goal that this implied ownership and responsibility would transform passive citizens into engaged
stakeholders to propel community action and ignite positive social change.
